Living and Working Sustainably - Courses

Grafton Community College has a number of sustainable living courses for people in the Clarence Valley and wider community. We are adding to these as new courses and tutors become available.

 Amateur Bee Keeping

  • Amateur Bee Keeping.

This workshop introduces potential bee keepers to the delight and fascination of this rewarding hobby. The session covers safety, myth busting, hands on bees, legal requirements and obligations of responsible bee keeping, and how to get started. Wear a broad-brimmed hat, long-sleeved shirt with collar, long trousers, shoes and socks. Four follow-on workshops (including hive construction) are planned.

  • Introduction to Solar & Wind Power Systems for Homes.

This course is essential for anyone who is interested in, or considering installing a renewable energy powers system. It will also be useful for anyone who owns a power system and needs to know more, or is considering upgrading. This easy-to-understand course introduces a comprehensive range of topics, considered essential for the student who is considering using this technology: system terms/ types/ design calculations, electrical terms/ units/ calculations, basic system maintenance and fault finding are some of the areas covered.

  • Photovolaic Power Systems.

If you have completed the ‘Introduction to Solar and Wind Power Systems for Homes’... then congratulations, you are well on your way...but there is still work to do!

1. Revision/reinforcement and discussion of those electro-technology terms and calculations, which are essential foundations of this subject.

2. A presentation showing the operation, manufacture and research history of solar cells and modules.

3. A practical session to reinforce the theory (sunny day booked!).

4. Time to plan your individual system or next step. Due to the practical and individual nature of this course, places are limited to 6 students.

  • “Eden at Home” Backyard Food Growing

All you need to know ... how to start a  backyard vegetable garden, maintenance, composting, pests & diseases, worm farm, seed raising and more. A practical introduction with hands on field trips. Learn how to raise vegetables and herbs from seeds; Seasonal planting-why plant what, where, and when; How to control pests and diseases organically; Why a worm farm is important; How to use a soil testing kit; How to store and cook your excess produce for future consumption.

Fee: $75
